Chief Bret B. Anderson

The Wisconsin Dells Police Department is truly one of the most unique police agencies in the United States. With a total staff under 30 employees; the department serves a residential population of 2,500 citizens and visitor populations exceeding 150,000 on peak weekends and holidays. Wisconsin Dells Police Department provides law enforcement and community service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The department has three areas of concentration: Patrol, Communications and Investigations.

PATROL DIVISION

The patrol staff is responsible for routine patrol, traffic enforcement and response to emergency and non-emergency calls within the city limits. Patrol officers work rotating shifts and are often called in for extended work on busy weekends, holidays and festivals. WDPD utilizes several forms of patrolling by means of squad cars, motorcycles and foot patrol.

WDPD’s fleet of squad cars are equipped with state of the art police equipment and technology designed to save lives and provide greater police service from the patrol car.  Included in the patrol fleet are two Harley Davidson Road King Police Cycles.

If you come to Wisconsin Dells from April to October, you will most likely see several police officers on foot patrol downtown. Officers on foot patrol help to provide constant uniformed presence in the downtown River District. Officers walk the beat at all hours of the day and night, helping to provide greater security and service to shop owners and visitors alike. WDPD also maintains a Police K-9 Unit that assists in both patrol and investigations. The K-9 Unit is currently handled by K-9 Officer Jesse Weaver and K-9 Gevaar. Duties of the K-9 include drug detection, criminal apprehension, building searches, tracking and evidence recovery.

COMMUNICATIONS DIVISION

The Communications Center of WDPD is responsible to handle not only police communications, but also fire and rescue traffic for an additional six townships besides the City of Wisconsin Dells. The Communications Center handles over 65,000 calls for service, and dispatched over 1,100 EMS and fire calls a year. The dispatch center is staffed by 911 operators that work with Enhanced 911 systems, TIME Terminals and Computer Aided Dispatch systems. The Communications Center also monitors changing weather patterns through a satellite terminal, and warns area emergency workers, campgrounds and businesses of severe weather moving into the area. In 2001 the Communications Center received an honorary mention for Dispatcher of the Year by the Association of Telecommunicators.

INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION

Wisconsin Dells Police Department is unique as veteran officers are called upon to seek advanced training and education in order to function as department investigators. Investigators must be prepared to handle a variety of cases due to the extreme diversity and population growth seen in the area. Each investigator takes on advanced training to develop expert knowledge and skill of various investigative techniques of specialized crimes. WDPD Investigators receive training from some of the most prestigious schools and trainers from the United States to include state and federal law enforcement trainers like the FBI, Department of Justice, DEA and the military.

The Wisconsin Dells Police Department has some of the Wisconsin’s finest law enforcement and communications officers. They are all dedicated professionals and I am proud to be their Chief.
